Danny Williams Kills in Ottawa

Routine about equity in Confederation has them rolling in aisles

Premier Danny Williams of Newfoundland and Labrador knocked them dead in Ottawa Wednesday evening.  Williams performed his act before an appreciative crowd at the Canadian Club, where he has an exclusive,  limited engagement. “Newfies are sooo funny,” said one patron.

The parts of the routine getting the biggest laughs were Williams’ riffs on Confederation. “That stuff he said about Quebec restricting the access of Newfoundland hydroelectric power to the rest of North America? it was hilarious.”

The Premier cracked wise about how Quebec has a stranglehold on the Canadian political process and how Newfoundland and Labrador, without leverage, is continually victimized. “Those poor, hapless Newfies,” laughed bartender Herb Dufferin, “they always get it in the end.”

“The punchline,” said a club member, “about how the rest of Canada, and especially Ontario, is getting shafted … Scotch came out my nose. Sure, jokes at the expense of Ontario may not be in great taste, but that’s Canada.”

“You know what they say,” said booking agent Morton Koningsberg, “it’s funny ’cause it’s true.  This material that Danny’s got, it’s evergreen.  As long as there are special deals for Quebec at the expense of those Newfies, Danny Williams will get lotsa laughs in Ottawa.”
